Upcoming: MASTERCLASS—NATURAL DYING WITH LUCILA KENNY
Discover the dye-pigment qualities of various plants that grow around us. Textile designer Lucila Kenny has been researching dyeing with natural colors for years.
The masterclass is a special collaboration between Catharina Maria Hof and Das Leben am Haverkamp. The masterclass can be seen as a two-part series: in Zeeland we work with natural dyes derived from plants, and in The Hague we extract natural dyes from the city’s organic waste. It is not required to attend both masterclasses, but it is highly recommended.
PROGRAM ZEELAND
Day 1: collecting plants and materials on the farm; these are then prepared and left to soak overnight.
Day 2: extracting the dyes from the plants and materials through heating and processing.
Basic knowledge of natural dyeing is helpful for this masterclass.
This workshop lasts 2 days and will be in English.
It is possible to stay overnight at the campsite of Catharina Maria Hof.

LUCILA KENNY
Lucila Kenny is an Argentinian textile designer based in Amsterdam, where she runs a research-driven studio for natural dyeing. Her work focuses on exploring, learning, and sharing knowledge about the rich diversity of local plant species and their dye properties. Sustainability, botanical color, and the cross-pollination between art, science, and craft are central to her practice.
Since 2016, she has worked closely with artist and biologist Naan Rijks on the joint project Painting Plants. Together, they maintained a dye garden in which they cultivated and studied specific plant species. They experimented with different methods of dye extraction and shared their findings through seminars, workshops, and their websites, aiming to create an open learning environment.
As a natural dyer and educator, Lucila has collaborated with universities, art academies, fashion designers, biologists, and artists. Her practice focuses on researching, preparing, and producing plant-based dyes for applications in textiles, inks, and paints - connecting traditional knowledge with contemporary practices. More info
CATHARINA MARIA HOF
Between vast fields, the Veerse Meer and the North Sea lies the Onrustpolder - an area that owes its name to the sandbank 'Onrust,' which once constantly shifted in shape and location. Onrust meaning restlessness in Dutch. Where the sea once had free rein, land reclamation and the construction of the Veerse Dam created a new landscape rich in nature, agriculture, and recreation. At the heart of this setting stands the farm: Catharina Maria Hof.
In the summer of 2022, makers Janne van Gilst and Gino Anthonisse returned from The Hague to our roots in Zeeland. They took over Janne’s family business and gave it a new direction. What once began as a traditional crop farm has, over the years, grown into a multifaceted place that includes care services, a small campsite, and -more recently- space for art and creativity.
At the core is working with materials and resources found directly in their surroundings. Their farm is the perfect place for this. It’s full of creative energy-building, making, and experimenting. In the past, the farm was a natural part of the community; through mechanization, that role has faded into the background. Janne and Gino want to bring that sense of community back, but in a new way: with art and design as a connecting force. More info
