SCREENING: ALTER EGOS—STARTING WITH A HUSH
In the dark streets of The Hague, the window of the Das Leben am Haverkamp studio will transform into an open air cinema! Every two weeks a new experimental triptych will be shown, presenting a new generation of image makers. Ranging from experimental film, to animation, to virtual fashion, the presented works explore the body and the act of dressing up as vehicles for change. Through speculative beings, they investigate the politics of the costumed body. Now on show: Starting with a hush by Benjamin Pompe.
In Starting with a Hush, elements such as drawings, found images are combined with sculpted meshes like theatrical set pieces. The video displays a selection of prop-like elements adding a key-framed animation to give a sense of depths and space. The story is such as the props formed in a collage-like manner instead of a carefully pre-constructed literal piece. The animation is transformed into a 2,5D diorama, blending flat objects and drawings within a three-dimensional environment. This approach gives life to these prop-like elements, infusing them with a dynamic sense of depth and movement.
In the scene, we see a character move through three dream-like phases contemplating a non coherant narrative. Personal and associative links emerge between various objects, sounds, shapes, and structures that, at first glance, appear to lack any common logic. Yet, through weaving together these disparate parts and techniques, a unique fictional realm is created, challenging the traditional norms of storytelling and fiction as an established medium.
