CAZ EGELIE & JESSE STRIKWERDA—A STAGED SLUMBER

Friday 8 March we open a brand new exhibition A Staged Slumber by Caz Egelie and Jesse Strikwerda. The project is developped during an artist in residency at our space. The new work is commissioned by Das Leben am Haverkamp and Rewire as part of a long-term collaboration between the two platforms, facilitating space for experimental crossovers between fashion, performance art and music.

08 March 2024–07 April 2024

The installation A Staged Slumber can be viewed as an index of characters in slumber, consisting of drawings, videos and sculptures, waiting for their moment to enter the stage. After their collaborative projects A smoker’s theatre (2021) and A bunch of red herrings (2022), Caz and Jesse continue their research on storytelling, the shaping of (art) history and the manipulability of identity through character building, sound and performativity.

CAZ EGELIE
Caz Egelie (1994) creates installations, performances, two-dimensional works, sound works and videos. In these, they combine a multidisciplinary visual vocabulary with a conceptual approach, leaning towards theater and performativity. By referencing art history and other artists, and employing unconventional methods of production and presentation, Caz engages in a game with the real and the fake, fact and fiction, reproduction, and 'the artist's signature.' By denying such classifications, Caz provides institutional criticism from the position of the jester, resulting in something that could be called a 'institutional jest.’ More info

JESSE STRIKWERDA
Jesse Strikwerda (1991) explores the nature of reality as a spectacle in his work, using drawn gestures on both paper and walls, with characters serving as potential actors. While reality is sometimes perceived as rigid and unchanging, Strikwerda seeks to make it dynamic. Theater serves as a recurring motif in his work, acting as a metaphor for the spectacle that forms society. Strikwerda invites critical reflection on the constructed nature of reality and the role individuals play in it. More info

REWIRE FESTIVAL
For the occasion of Rewire Festival Caz and Jesse invited a multitude of musicians, dancers and artists to perform in the context of the exhibition. By performing slippery compositions, spoken opera and experimental recorders, they attempt to awaken the characters from their slumber.

The program contains selected works and improvisations by Amanda Payne, Currently Zoë, Hildur Elísa, Ian Skirvin, jochemjochemjochem, Johu Myllylä, Liam McCall, Lotte van Gelder, menu menu.
